I decided to give Isidora’s first solo hour a shot, as her show’s description was relatable, about leaving behind her roaring 20s and welcoming her ever-so-scary and serious 30s. So, on the 17th of August, I went to see her Fringe Preview performance.

To my delight, the room was packed. I managed to snatch a seat in the front row to guarantee a more immersive experience. Isidora’s 80s-style, fuschia-pink dress and wild, curly hair reminded me of a character from Full House. It was an inviting beginning to the show.

She opened with a short introduction of herself and how she feels going into her thirties, touching on how society pressures you from a young age to have your shit together, be married, and have a fantastically successful career by the time you hit the big 3-0. Most of us in the crowd, me included, nodded in agreement.

When Isidora recounted her youth, I think I can say for most Estonians in the crowd that her upbringing was a somewhat unique one, considering she went to Catholic schools her whole life. Throughout her set, she hit us with carefully selected punchlines and jokes that sometimes caught us off guard. They’re so well-curated that I could feel she had worked meticulously on her solo show, perfecting every bit of it. And my god, was it funny!

Her tales of dating life were utterly hilarious and very relatable. She has certainly met some odd fish in the sea. The crazy relationships she’s had leave her with funny stories to tell but also offer a look into the misogyny she has encountered. In any case, topics like these are easy to relate to as a woman and important to talk about. She skillfully addressed serious issues with a touch of comedy.

Isidora was very open when telling her stories and interacting with the crowd. Throughout her show, she asked the audience for their input and for us to tell stories about our lives. Not only is she a funny comedian, but she is also quick-witted and can deliver a punchline on the spot!

I thoroughly enjoyed Isidora’s Fringe Preview show. Isidora has a mean poker face and delivers jokes dryly, and then her exaggerated facial expressions make the experience that much better. It was a fun-filled, engaging, and charismatic show. I truly recommend seeing her performances during this year’s Tallinn Fringe Festival!

Isidora Salcedo will perform at 7 PM on the 21st and 31st of August at Ratas & Kohv and at 7 PM on the 9th of September at Heldeke. If you’re visiting our neighbors in Latvia, you can also see her on the stage of Riga Cherry Bar on the 5th of September at 7 PM!
