Every day, we see more shows that are part of the performing arts spectrum and that mix or incorporate elements from different spaces — for example, gamification inspired by TV shows, new technologies, or programs designed to engage audiences through their phones, among others. This was very present in the show Tallinn Comedy Dating Game Show, created by the comedian Žana Fejzić.
In this show, there are two rounds of questions where the friends of single participants come up on stage to answer game-show-style questions on their behalf, helping them “win” a date. The questions range from romantic ones to silly and playful topics. At the end of each round, the friend of the bachelor or bachelorette chooses the contestant’s friend whose answers they liked the most.
At the beginning of the show, the comedian introduces herself and talks a bit about her background and current life. She also clarifies that this is a fun, lighthearted game not something serious and that it should be seen more as a “friendship game.” It is up to each participant whether they actually want to go on a date with the chosen person.
To start each round, the performer calls the friends of the contestants on stage. During the round, there is no direct crowd work; however, since the friends of the bachelors are on stage answering questions about their friends on various topics, there is still a sense of interaction and connection with the audience. In this way, the show naturally creates a feeling of crowd work and closeness between performers and spectators.
On the other hand, the show is shaped by spontaneity and improvisation, as the artist plays and interacts with the different answers given by the contestants.
The show offers a fun and original way to approach the idea of dating and meeting people something that, in the era of red flags, Tinder, and alpha males, can often be challenging. Here, it is presented through a relaxed, playful, and chill atmosphere. Finally, the show maintains a dynamic and cheerful rhythm throughout the entire performance.
