All the way from Georgia, USA, Christy Inhulsen is a stand-up comedian who brings to Heldeke! a storytelling performance that mixes comedy and music to explore the lessons of aging and recall multicultural experiences, especially between the sheets.

At the beginning of the show, she explains the dynamic of the show and also gets to know a little bit about the audience. From the start, the artist plays with the unexpected and opposites: a conservative, traditional background contrasted with raunchy memories from travels across Asia, from Japan to Thailand to Nepal. In many cases, the story is accompanied by a sweet voice, and as an audience member, you don’t know until the end where the story is going or how the punchline will land. Usually, it lands with sassy, ironic, and darkly humorous twists that are impossible see coming.

Throughout the set, the artist plays with the idea of flowers, which in puritanical cultures carry a naughty symbolic meaning, and introduces this concept in a playful and comedic way, giving it a character of its own. Her willingness to be both plainspoken and coyly crass are enjoyable contrasts throughout, and the sheer number of flowers she casually names throughout the show (rather than saying directly what she means) is impressive.

In addition, she performs three different songs in the form of parody or humorous elements. In some cases, these are introduced with a dance, giving a special rhythm or beat. These musical elements leave the audience with energy and cheerfulness, and at the end, it provides a positive and memorable conclusion to the show, with an unexpected and sweet, intimate ending that draws us into her community. It’s a great way to start a fresh week in the middle of a stressful January.

This was Inhulsen’s last show in Estonia for now, but we’ll hopefully see her on stage again before the year is over.
