The venue itself was quite nice in that the back bar area of their cafe turned into a chill drink & socializing space for people who wanted to take a little break from the main stage while still well within earshot of the music being performed.
Also between the ticketing entrance and the actual stage entrance was an artist reception area with snacks and drinks for the artist that gave the attendees sitting or milling about the back bar area a chance to meet & greet the various artists who performed that evening.
The first act on the stage was “Estonian Voices” that have been around some years on the scene and delivered a clean & crisp set one would expect from the cool cats that have played around for more than a few years.
They brought the house down with their new fan favorite “Naba”.
(SE) Mumriq:
The track “A Building” brought memories of Tom Waits to my mind and made me long for a drink of bourbon whiskey to go along with the sonorous sounds coming from the lovely Klara. It’s been said that artists like Captain Beefheart & Nick Cave expanded Jazz’s encounters with alternative, rock, free jazz and art music. The dynamic quartet of Mumriq is carrying this ever forward in their more than capable hands.
(SE) ““The Rocket”, Svante Söderqvist Trio & Tuulikki Bartosik:
These cats were hands down the most ‘Classical’ of the jazz acts on stage, very talented in their dexterity on various instruments with soft sounds of The Third One being stuck in my head.
Also it so happens they’re the most profitable acts for merchandise as even after TMW’s small % cut he brought in well over a hundred €’s cash in hand from all of the record sales, and I should know as I was behind the desk selling them.
(LT) Vilnius JJAZZ Ensemble:
Wow where do I begin here as this is a huge range of artistic motion, experimental to put it very mildly as their latest works (RAVENJAZZ) at times sound almost like Techno but not to worry as they’ve blended these two genres very well indeed, a couple of their more electronic tracks could be played at HALL.
(EE) Alonette:
Her whimsical melodic performance started soft and easy but as her set neared its close she sped up the tempo to catch more hangers on to move closer to the stage & possibly join her in some free flow dancing to her signature track “True North”
(PL) Jakub Paulski Trio:
A smooth Trad Jazz act that was a perfect cool down final performance that brought the audience back to jazz roots.
For the set they played their new album ‘’Free’odde” which had some good contrasting memorable moments like between “2 listopada pt. 2” Which at times the trumpet solos kinda sorta reminded me of Miles Davis.
In Closing:
The night was long but hardly seemed so as my & my TMW colleague took turns going to see the live acts and sometimes interacting with the artists who were literally right next to our merchandise tables.
A lot of people discovered some new artists they might never have heard of otherwise that made for quite a memorable evening.
