Benjamin Heckscher takes the stage alone with a microphone and starts sharing stories from his life, and it doesn’t take long before you start recognising yourself in some of them.
In Teenagers and Old People, the American comedian talks about getting older, everyday life, moving to Estonia and the growing gap between generations. From health and ageing to the things younger people seem to understand effortlessly while the rest of us are still trying to figure them out, there is plenty to relate to.
Having also moved to Estonia, Benjamin brings another layer to the show that I particularly enjoyed. As a foreigner myself, some of his observations about living here felt very familiar, and the audience seemed to recognise quite a few of his experiences too.
The show moves naturally between personal stories, observations about getting older and the increasingly confusing world of younger generations. There were plenty of moments when I found myself thinking, “Yes, exactly.”
The room was laughing throughout, and the hour passed surprisingly quickly. Teenagers and Old People is a very relatable and easy-going stand-up show, with enough personal stories and generational observations to make you feel like you’re not the only one trying to keep up.
A very good way to spend an hour, especially if you’ve ever found yourself wondering when exactly you became one of the “old people”.
The final show is Friday 18 September at 1900, one of the closing events of the Tallinn Fringe Festival.
