The idea behind Tasting Menu is a fun one. Instead of simply taking us through a stand-up set, Eryn Tett presents the show as a multi-course meal, with each part of the performance becoming another dish on the menu.
The stage is dressed accordingly, with colourful props and decorations inspired by food and cooking, creating a playful setting that fits the concept nicely. The comedian also involves the audience throughout the show, bringing people into the performance without making participation feel uncomfortable or forced.
One thing I particularly appreciated was the way Eryn handled consent. Before involving audience members, she takes the time to ask for permission rather than simply putting people on the spot. It is a small detail, but it makes a real difference and creates a more comfortable atmosphere.
The performance moves through its different “courses”, mixing personal stories, audience interaction and comedy. The format is certainly unusual, and there is a clear effort to make the audience feel part of the experience rather than simply watching from their seats.
Tasting Menu is a colourful and original take on stand-up, with a creative concept and a thoughtful approach to audience participation. Whether every course will be to everyone’s taste is another question, but the presentation certainly gives the show its own flavour.
Tickets are still on sale for the show’s final night on Saturday 12 September. The Tallinn Fringe Festival continues with comedy and more until 18 September.
